New biomass boiler at Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej

Work on a large project carried out by the municipal company has been completed Thermal Energy Company. The project included the liquidation of the boiler WR-25 coal boiler and the construction of a 12.5 MW biomass boiler in its place, together with with the necessary infrastructure. Thanks to the investment, the following will be reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 23 thousand tons/year. The boiler is already after a trial Boot. Total cost of the investment is nearly PLN 40 million, the co-financing covered 45% of the costs Eligible.

New installation will enable the production of ecological heat, which will supply the municipal network heating plant in Ełk. It is expected that the entity will work during the period of as a primary source together with the current biomass boiler with a basic 5.75 MW, and the remaining coal-fired boilers will act as peak sources. The planned heat production from the newly built installation is nearly 195 thousand GigaJ/year. Thanks to the investment, emissions will be reduced carbon dioxide by over 23 thousand tonnes/year.

Renewable energy sources play an essential role in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also an equally important improvement in energy security.

Biomass has become in recent energy carrier in the EU, where its share in the generation of energy heat and electricity is growing at a rate of 5-9% per year.

There are several important arguments for the energy use of biomass. In favor of using this energy source both the EU's energy policy, which defines the share of renewable energy energy sources (RES) in the annual energy balance. Equally important is the the great technical potential of biomass or the fact that in the production of heat from biomass, we have a zero balance of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Steady increase in the prices of CO 2 and changes in the law on emission standards into the atmosphere, encouraged us to in 2022, to replace one of the 3 coal-fired boilers with another biomass boiler.

The implemented investment will result in increase in the volume of production of carbon dioxide-free heat from coal combustion up to 60% of the total annual production, which as a result of the implementation of the investment will allow us to achieve the status of a system of energy efficiency. Achieving this status, in turn, will enable the application of further funds from national funds and EU funds.

The implemented project is a huge undertaking, both financial and Logistic. After all, the heating plant is working normally all the time and provides heat to the people of Ełcz. Profits from the implemented of the investment will be transferred directly to consumers (this results directly from the Energy Law). The residents of Ełk will benefit from lower prices for heat, as large cost to the company is both the price of coal (in recent years very much and the huge costs of carbon dioxide emission rights.

Total cost of the project is the amount of PLN 39,477,261.74, including eligible costs of PLN 32 PLN 069,704.75. The implementation of the investment was possible thanks to the Norway Grants. We received a subsidy of 14 PLN for the implementation of the project PLN 431,367.14 (the amount of co-financing is up to 45% of eligible costs project). Over PLN 13.7 million comes from a loan from the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
